This classic of twentieth century Spanish literature was the novel which propelled Vicente Blasco Ibañez to global attention when it was first published in Spanish in 1916, and two years later in English in the USA. It was filmed in the first of many versions in 1921, giving a then unknown Rudolph Valentino a starring role.
A Valencian lawyer, politician, and journalist by profession, Blasco Ibañez, was a much published author in Spain when he arrived in Paris in 1914, well placed to give a first-hand account of the dying days of peace and the early stages of the war. These historic events are portrayed with journalistic accuracy but set within the fictional context of one family´s experience. Having left France in the fateful prelude to the Franco Prussian War of 1870, the Desnoyers have amassed a fortune in Argentina, and grown to include three generations with Argentine, Spanish, French and German connections. Their return to Europe pitches them into an apocalypse that strains loyalties to breaking point. This is a family saga, a love story, a tragedy, in which, despite the backdrop of apocalyptic global events, the gentleness, devotion and courage of the female spirit will still triumph.
